Photos of the twilight years of this class, featuring 28 locos working for Virgin, DRS and GBRf. The surprisingly unsung 87s have put in more years (1974-2007) on the WCML than did the Duchesses (1937-1964). Assuming an average of 200,000 miles per year, each loco will have clocked up some 6 million miles, more than three times the highest total amassed by a Duchess. The class appeared to have reached the end of its life when 87022 and 87028 ran on the WCML in December 2007, but newly preserved 87002 kept the flag flying in 2008. These 46 powerful, complex and expensive locos were built 1993-1996 to haul freight and sleeping car services from Britain via the Channel Tunnel into Europe.

In practice, their fortunes have been very mixed. The Nightstar project was cancelled in 1997 and the 7 locos built for it - 92020 / 21 / 32 / 40 / 44-46 - have spent most of their careers in store. EWS have never operated their entire fleet of 30 locos, though until 2006 they had the use of the 9 locos owned by SNCF.

Here are 76 photos of every class member except 021 / 035 / 040 & 045. Most of the photos were taken around Carnforth in 2004-2006, when daytime class 92 duties were: a morning intermodal from Mossend to Daventry, and a return working in the afternoon; a log train from Mossend to Warrington, with corresponding northbound empties; and evening Enterprises from Carlisle to Eastleigh, and Warrington to Carlisle.

At the time of writing (January 2007), class 92s have become less common on the northern WCML because EWS have lost the intermodal and timber traffic (to DRS and Amec) previously handled by the class.
